Overview
Personnel in the modern maintenance environment must understand the commonly used equipment and controls in their plant. The aim of this course is to provide an understanding of electrical systems and an awareness of the circuitry, controls and associated hazards found in typical electrical systems in your plant. The participants will be given information regarding electrical systems, safety, protection equipment and electrical components and control systems commonly used in industry. The participants will gain an understanding of PLC’s and how they link with field equipment. There is a strong practical element to this course.
Learning Approach
Day one:
Review of Electrical basics.
- Voltage
- Current
- Resistance
- Power
Importance of safety when working on electrical circuits & design of electrical protection.
Introduction to Programmable logic controllers.
- Understanding what a digital input is.
- Understanding what digital output is.
- Understanding the difference between 0-10V and 4-20ma analog signals.
Introduction to the PLC programming environment.
- Creating a project.
- Developing a small PLC programme.
- Uploading and Download projects.
- Backing up a project.
Day Two:
Review of electrical safety precautions when working on automated equipment.
- Safety Relays.
- Emergency Stops, etc.
- Lockout/tagout procedures.
Review of electrical schematics, understanding how they are designed and fault finding using electrical schematics.
- Review of companies own schematics for fault finding etc.
Wiring digital inputs and digital outputs on the PLC training rig.
- Developing a PLC program.
Day Three:
Creating a final project consisting of the following:
- Input / Output list.
- Electrical Schematics
- Wiring Inputs / Outputs (as per electrical schematics).
- Creating a PLC program.
- Fault-finding using both electrical schematics and PLC software.
