Overview
This 3 day HVAC course has been specifically tailored for Maintenance Technicians & Tradesmen, to provide them with the knowledge necessary to confidently approach a range of different air conditioning systems and to carry out effective fault diagnosis, repair, service and maintenance. You will also be provided with the skills necessary to deal confidently with outside air-conditioning contractors and witness system commissioning.
Participant Profile
National Vocational Certificate Level 1, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant work experiences in an associated industry position. Participants need not necessarily come from a craft background in mechanical or electrical maintenance.
Trainer Profile
The trainer has worked extensively in the Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning sector. During his career he has worked as a distributor, a Technical Support Manager for an Air conditioning manufacturer and as a consultant on a number of large projects. He also provides training in Ireland and the UK as well as providing Consultancy on the Irish AC Market to a number of UK Clients. He is a member of the International Institute of Refrigeration (an Intergovernmental advisory body) and The International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration.

Course Content
Day 1: Basics of the Vapour Compression system
On completion of this unit, participants should be able to:
- Explain in simple terms with the aid of practical demonstrations the basic principles of refrigeration
- Explain the various processes a refrigerant goes through while absorbing and rejecting heat
- Practice good housekeeping rules with regard to the environment and their own safety
- Explain the purpose of the most common system components
- Understand the safety controls in ac units
- Work safely on Air Conditioning Units
- Understand the dangers involved.
- Overview of ODS and F Gas Legislation
- Understand the differences between CFC, HCFC & HFC Refrigerants
- Understand the alternative Natural refrigerants (Ammonia, CO2 & Hydrocarbons)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the information on unit rating plates
Day 2: Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems, VRF, Metering Devices, Head Pressure Control, Compressors, Superheat and Sub cooling.
On completion of this unit, participants should be able to:
- Explain the operation of a heat Pump Circuit
- Describe the Purpose and Operation of all Components in a heat Pump
- Demonstrate an Understanding of the control strategies in Air conditioning systems
- Identify the position and purpose of sensors in ac units
- Identify the different styles of Split System and the advantages of each system
- Principle of operation of VRF Systems
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of Humidity Control
- Show a practical Understanding of Air Conditioning Load Calculation
- Identify types of metering device
- Demonstrate an understanding of Thermostatic Expansion Valves, Electronic Expansion Valves and Capillary Tubes
- Understand the importance of Head Pressure Control
- Identify methods of head pressure control
- Understand the relationship of head Pressure control to system performance
- Understand the operation of Reciprocating, Rotary, Scroll and Screw compressors
- Understand the importance of Superheat and Sub cooling
Day 3: Maintenance and service procedures, Refrigerants, Vacuuming and dehydrating systems, pressure Testing, Glide and Slide (Fractionation)
On completion of this unit participants should be able to:
- Identify how and what parameters should be logged and explain the importance of keeping records such as commissioning sheets
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge to carry out simple fault-finding and maintenance tasks
- Clean and replace Air Filters
- Understand how to read refrigerant gauges and analyse the information
- Demonstrate how to measure Sub cooling and superheat
- Understand leak-testing procedures
- Demonstrate an understanding of fault code analysis
- Identify system refrigerants
- Know the dangers, both personal and Environmental, of refrigerants
- Understand Glide and Slide in both
- Understand the importance of Dehydration and how it is achieved in Vapour compression Systems
- Understand pressure testing
